UPDATED FILE: Version 1.3 ~ December 8th 2011

This is a guide for new users who would like to know how they can get started with using the fractal art program Ultra Fractal. It includes links to some of the best, and most relevant online tutorials and resources, on DA and elsewhere. I have also added a number of hints and tips that I have learned myself, along the way.

Please note that this is not a tutorial on the program, just a quick reference to other sources of quality information. A few people have asked if I would provide this info so here it is! Hopefully it will be of interest and help people to get started with UF. :D

If you find this informative and useful please :+fav: this deviation.

Revision history:
:bulletgreen: January 18th 2008, original v1.0 uploaded.
:bulletgreen: November 21st 2008, v1.1: removed broken links, added new links and notes on UF v.5.
:bulletgreen: January 12th 2010, v1.2: updated with link to new JP course e-books, the UF Wiki and other DA links.
:bulletgreen: December 8th 2011, v1.3: broken web links corrected/removed.

Downloading notes:
Click the download link at the top left to access the file. It's a 7-page .PDF file - to read it you will need to have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. [link] If you have problems saving the file then my recommendation would be to try again in a few hours or the next day - the file is fine but sometimes DA doesn't deliver it reliably! ;)

:bulletred: A Spanish translation of the original English v.1 file is available here: Aprendiendo Ultra Fractal
:bulletred: An Italian translation of the English v1.3 file is available here: Impariamo a usare Ultra Fractal

PS. Wow! A daily Deviation!
Thanks so much =dlr4553 for suggesting it and `FantasyStock for featuring it!

Daily Deviation

Given 2011-09-09
It's another Fractal Resource Friday, and Learning Ultra Fractal by *Velvet--Glove is a great resource for novice fractal artists! -- Suggester's words: Chris has put together a great guide for the beginner with Ultra Fractal. Instead of creating yet another tutorial, she has instead provided users a list of where to find the best tutorials and resources already in existence. ( Suggested by =dlr4553 and Featured by `FantasyStock )

Thank you so much for this - I might be tempted to give it a go. I love your work...and fractals in general, but have never been brave enough to give it a try :)

The past is history, the future is a mystery, today is a gift - that's why it's called the present.

You're welcome. I hope you will give UF a whirl and discover for yourself just how much fun it can be, even in the earliest phases of learning. :)

Good luck!

Chris you know me. I'm Sue who used to be !winklepickers
I finally changed my account.

I've started learning and am finding it less difficult than a couple of years ago when I tried it on Windows.
I've downloaded the Mac beta version.
I think that since I've learned quite a bit about Photoshop and other fractal programmes since then, it's easier for me now.

The main problem I have is with the gradient editor. There was no gradient folder so I made one and put some gradients from *Fiery-Fire into it. It won't open and I can't see any gradients apart from the built in one.
I suppose I ought to ask about it but it would be cheeky before I eventually buy it.

I must go over the help files several times now to get familiar with the tools.
The owner can't know but it renders well with nothing written all over it.

I finally changed my profile name. :)

Ah! Hello Sue! :D  I'll try and remember your new username (no guarantees, I have a rubbish memory!!)

Some thoughts:
1. Check in Options: Folder tab to see if UF is looking in the right place for the gradients.
2. Make sure gradient files end in .ugr and that they are simple text (e.g not something copied from a word processor that might be formatted)
3. If you're still having trouble then email Frederik for help - doesn't matter that you've not bought the program yet - this is a free beta that he is looking for help with, to iron out any potential bugs etc. It wouldn't be cheeky, you are helping him and may well be a paying customer in future. Your present use of the prog is perfectly legitimate, don't worry!
4. The watermark-free rendering is almost certainly deliberate too - the beta will expire in a couple of months so enjoy the full and free use while you can.

They are .ugr files by *Fiery-Fire so I suppose they are OK.
I can't find Options anywhere.
I have a old Windows trial version that I never got to terms with( that still works) and this new one is not quite the same. Things are in different places.

I think I'll be patient and try over this month to get used to the tools and reread and use the help files several times. I can wait to add anything new.
I usually shout for help without trying to understand first. :)

Thank you, Chris. :)
