Artist's Comments

Version 1.1 ~ November 2008

This is a guide for new users who would like to know how they can get started with using the fractal art program Ultra Fractal. It includes links to some of the best, and most relevant online tutorials and resources, on DA and elsewhere. I have also added a number of hints and tips that I have learned myself, along the way.

Please note that this is not a tutorial on the program, just a quick reference to other sources of quality information. A few people have asked if I would provide this info so here it is! Hopefully it will be of interest and help people to get started with UF. :D

:pointr: Update - a note about Ultra Fractal 5:
*Ultra Fractal v.5
was released in June 2008 after this Guide was written.
Whilst it is still perfectly valid and possible to use all the older v.4 style formulas, colourings and techniques described in most of the tutorials mentioned in this guide it should be noted that v.5 introduced a radically different way of creating fractal images, through the use of Object and Class components (commonly referred to as "plugins"). Working through the material suggested in this Guide will still be useful and relevant to new users of UF5, and recommended for the understanding of many fractal making fundamentals, but do be aware that this is only half the story of what is now possible.

Revision history:
January 18th 2008, original v1.0 uploaded.
November 21st 2008, v1.1: removed broken links, added new links and notes on UF v.5.

Downloading notes:
Click the download link at the top left to access the file. It's a 6-page .PDF file - to read it you will need to have Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher installed. [link] If you have problems saving the file then my recommendation would be to try again in a few hours or the next day - the file is fine but sometimes DA doesn't deliver it reliably! ;)

PS. A Spanish translation of the original v.1 file is available here: Aprendiendo Ultra Fractal

I change my mind. There are such things as a terrible artist. If you don't want to be one of them PRACTICE.

Does UF only make spirals?
:iconfractek:
I noticed your question..... no UF doesn't just make spirals... it is a very versatile program and the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Purple is the colour of majesty. God's majesty lives inside your belly like a dormant whirlpool waiting to fire up when His will is to be done. Let the Purple Whirlpool take over your life and see His majesty reign.

It's very giving of you.

You're welcome, Kirsty. I suppose even old hands might find it useful to have a record of links to things like the formula database site, the locations of private formulas and author help files etc. :)
