Artist's Comments

November 11th 2008 is Remembrance Day, symbolised by the Poppy flower. [link]

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

very lovely! i don't understand how fractals can be made to look like real objects, but i love the bright colors!

Instant fav.

Wonderful representation of poppies! They're just perfect. I really like the leaves with their gentle curves. The neutral background and framing work great against the brilliant red of the flowers. Nice touch with the little gold corner pieces in the inner frame. Beautiful composition.

This is now one of my favorite fractals of yours.

Amazing. Beautiful. Touching.

I'm currently researching my family history. Both of my grandfathers were in the Army during WWI. I haven't been able to work out if either of them was in Flanders at any time but I do know that they both survived (although one of them was not entirely unscathed) and I'm here as a result of their survival. I am very grateful to them. I am also grateful to those who gave their lives in the pursuit of my freedom.

I am extremely jealous of your ability to produce such amazingly representative floral fractals. :)

Thanks, I'm glad the colours appealed to you. :)

The basis of my work is to layer or blend many different shapes to create the objects, adding texture and dimension through the gradient and using transparency to isolate different parts. This example uses around 40 layers to achieve the effect I wanted (including all the framing and background effects). The fractal algorithms of the program I use then causes these objects to repeat, infinitely, in the spirals and sub-spirals. Sounds complicated, I'm sure, but once you understand the program almost anything is possible. :)
